Today I saw an article on North Carolina football coach Butch Davis and how he found out he had non-Hodgkins lymphoma. As all of us do, I wish no one ever has to hear “you have cancer” but I am also realistic. It is going to continue until more progress is made.
Much like my own cancer experience/story, Coach Davis has one heck of a story to speak to people about. You see his dentist found a growth in his mouth during a routine checkup. They have not revealed much detail, but signs are that the cancer has been caught early and is being treated with several rounds of chemotherapy. Everything happens for a reason and it just happened for Coach Davis that a simple trip to the dentist saved his life.
Though I wish Coach Davis never got cancer, I do hope he will join the army of cancer survivors in the obligation of the cured. We need more people to tell their stories and let others know how important it is to catch cancer early.
The #1 thing we can do to help fight cancer and reduce the number of deaths is to identify cancer early. Last year the ACS has published that almost 50% of all cancer related deaths could have been prevented.
Let’s hope Coach Davis’ story has triggered a few people to get checked out.
